Art and Design

In the Teesdale School art department, we are constantly amazed at how creative our students are and how they approach different tasks with individuality and enthusiasm. We are very lucky to have a department with the best views in school which make our classes a lovely place to be.

Art and design lessons at Teesdale School are well resourced, with a kiln for glass and ceramic work, good ICT facilities and a forthcoming dark room and photography studio to enable students to develop their ideas using photography.

Art and design is a popular subject, not only to take as an option, but also at lunchtimes and after school, where a whole range of different activities take place. We pride ourselves on being a vibrant, mutually respectful and inclusive department, where we are always open for students wishing to come and be creative. Students enjoy the opportunity to express themselves, explore using different materials and techniques and develop new ideas from looking at the work of artists and cultures.

I love art lessons at Teesdale and I was really pleased with my latest assessment where we had to draw a human skull. I felt really proud because I created a good 3D effect and I did this using shading. I was really pleased with the outcome.

Year 7 student

Curriculum information:

Year 7
Learning outcomes	In Year 7, students will explore the building blocks of art and design and develop their making skills when working with different materials and techniques. They will look at a variety of contextual sources to develop their ideas and will experience using both 2D and 3D materials.

Year 8
Learning outcomes	During Year 8, students will continue to experience a wide range of materials and techniques and will also learn and use art key terms when refining their ideas. They will explore using technical drawing techniques as used by architects, learn about the wider world’s traditions and cultures in the Asia project and will get to make their own funky letter whilst exploring typography with three dimensional materials.

Year 9
Learning outcomes	In Year 9, students get to explore in more depth ceramic work and printing. They will begin to work with more independence when using materials and developing their own ideas. They will experience using both 2D and 3D materials and will select their own theme in the mystery project, giving them a chance to really express themselves in a creative way.

Year 10
Learning outcomes	Recording observations is a major part of the Year 10 curriculum, with emphasis on high quality drawing skills and photography. Students will explore manipulating images using editing software and will explore drawing with a variety of materials. Students will begin to create a portfolio of work which will demonstrate their ability to meet the assessment objectives.

Year 11
Learning outcomes	In their final year, art and design students will build an externally assessed portfolio of work meeting the assessment objectives. Refining and modifying their work will be paramount and they will need to be able to analytically reflect on the work they have done previously. This will lead to a 10 hour external exam, where students will culminate their ideas.

Play

Art gives me the freedom to express myself. I enjoy developing my ideas through using photography as well as exploring different materials and techniques. I also enjoy looking at the work of various artists to help me come up with new ideas.
