Abigail Kent

After leaving sixth form in summer 2016 I went to university for a short space of time before realising I really wanted to become a ski instructor.

I used all of my savings to move to Austria for three months to complete my skiing exams. I then moved to a ski school on placement for three weeks before going back to training for my Landes 1.

In spring I decided to move to Jersey to be closer to someone I met whilst training to be a ski instructor, and we now live together with my dog. I am now a supervisor of a shoe brand in the islands largest department store.

What are your future plans and ambitions?

I plan to do another season of skiing next year.

What has been the highlight of your life so far after leaving school?

My highlight has to be when I was standing at the top of the giant slalom track on Landes 1 exam day, the weather was awful and one of my course mates sang me the Eminem lyrics, “this opportunity comes once in a lifetime… GO!”. It was the best run I could have done and it made me pass my final exam. Passing this course put me in the top 20% of ski instructors worldwide.

What is your favourite Teesdale memory?

I enjoyed dance in PE lessons; my coordination leaves much to be desired… Oh and the Year 12 Geography field trip to Malham - that was a good laugh.

Advice to my younger self...

My advice to my younger self is; university isn’t for everyone, push yourself to go and do something different, don’t worry about pleasing people, you will only be your best when you do what you love. GO AND DO IT!

You can invite one person to a dinner party - who do you invite and why?

My dog, if she could talk… I’d like to know what she really thinks of my cooking.
